New Year, Less Stuff

... Journal Entry

With the decision to do mostly 35mm film photography this year using my Nikon F80 outfit came the realisation that most of my other extensive collection of digital gear was about to sit around unused. What to do?

After a lot of throwing ideas around in my head and searching around the web (trying to filter out the shed loads of bias and disinformation out there) I came to a blindingly obvious conclusion (which eluded me for ages I must admit) which was I needed a digital camera body to use with the set of Nikon AF-D lenses that I already have that go with my F80's.

As the AF-D series of lenses have no AF motors in them and rely on an in body motor to drive them, that precludes using any of the latest mirrorless Nikon bodies and pointed the way towards a D-SLR. Research led me to the D780  and their availability in the used market which was pretty good. All I need to do now is to sell my old digital kit to release the capital and cover the cost of the acquisition of suitable used one.

Thus I will, sometime soon hopefully, have a highly rationalised main outfit comprising:

  • Nikon F80 Body
  • Nikon F80D Body
  • Nikon D780 Body
  • Nikon AF 20mm f2.8 D
  • Nikon AF 35mm f2 D
  • Nikon AF 50mm f1.4 D
  • Nikon AF 85mm f1.8 D
  • Nikon AF 70-210mm f4-5.6 D

The only digital camera from my old outfit that may well hold onto is my Sony RX100 VII compact which is a great little machine for slipping into a pocket when travelling super light and still outperforms any smart phone camera by a long way.

A new year with much, much less stuff. Huzzah! Well, maybe?
