Waterworks

The intricacies of a preserved steam powered waterworks; wheels within wheels, brass and steel, gauges and dials. The mechanical engineering of days gone by.

Once again, captured at f0.95 on a Voigtländer Nokton 17.5mm for that classic look for this classic machinery.

Used close up the shallow zone of focus of the lens is clearly illustrated in these pictures and has to used with due consideration.

The mechanical complexities of these beautiful machines can be drawn out through careful composition and the juxtaposition of repeated shapes and balanced elements.

Pictures like the one above pull together strong vertical elements to reflect the massive strength of the machines themselves. There is an imposing power about them, even in repose. Further pictures from this set may be found here.
